Is Muesli a Healthy Snack?

September 15, 2021 Posted by Lizzy Briskin Clean Eating Recipes, Healthy Eating

Here’s why muesli is a healthy snack, thanks to whole grains, tons of gut-healthy fiber and complex carbohydrates.

Foods with Healthy Fats

Whether you’re packing a lunch for your kid’s school or looking for an afternoon pick-me-up for yourself, it can be hard to find healthy snacks that also taste great. However, one good-for-you snack that you may be overlooking is muesli. This healthy blend of oats, dried fruit and nuts, is full of protein, fiber and essential nutrients.

Here’s why you should consider adding muesli to your healthy snack repertoire.

Ways to Eat Muesli

1. Muesli is whole-grain

Mu Mu Muesli is made from organic whole grain rolled oats and red wheat flakes. By definition, whole grains are less processed than other grains, including white flour and quick-cooking oats. Less processing means that these grains retain more of their nutrients. In particular, whole grains are an excellent source of dietary fiber, protein and B vitamins.

Studies show that people who regularly include whole grains in their diets have a significantly lower risk of heart disease and stroke. To be precise, one study concluded that eating three 1-ounce servings of whole grains per day resulted in a 22% lower chance of heart disease.

2. Muesli contains protein

Another hallmark of a healthy snack is that it contains a good balance of all three macronutrients (fat, protein and carbohydrates). In muesli, you get protein from the oats and the nuts. Eating protein in your snacks helps keep you satiated and may keep you from giving into unhealthy cravings later in the day.

3. It’s a versatile snack

You might think of muesli as a breakfast cereal served hot or cold. But the truth is that you can do a lot more with muesli than serve it with a spoon. Of course, cereal also makes a great snack. You can cook with muesli to make granola bars, muffins, energy bites, and more. See how to make your own muesli granola bars here.

4. It’s shelf-stable

Unlike yogurt and other fresh products, you can store muesli in the pantry without risking it going bad. For this reason, museli is a healthy snack that’s also portable and ready to enjoy whenever hunger strikes.
